The faculty cluster in the area of LGBTQ Equity, part of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of LGBTQ Citizenship, with emphasis in transgender studies, with an expected start date of July 1, 2018.

We define transgender studies broadly as work that explores the complex environments, dynamics, and/or emergent ramifications of gender identity (including agender) in a changing and transnational world. We are looking for candidates with a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary scholarship who are engaged in research that has relevance to transgender issues. Areas of specialization might include (but are not restricted to) political movements and coalition building; issues related to transgender identities and socialities; systems of institutionalization (prisons, shelters, juvenile detention facilities) and transgender populations within them; political economy; migration studies; conceptions of identity and/or transition; histories of transgender identities; the roles of medicine and technology; issues related to youth and/or aging in transgender populations, political and technical assemblages of recognition, identification, and surveillance; analyses of labor, money, insurance, welfare, and value; religious and ethical engagements and emergent forms; literary and film criticism and cultural/media studies.

Teaching duties include a diversity of undergraduate and graduate courses in the home department. The successful candidate will be appointed to one or more departments at Berkeley in affiliation with the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. The successful candidate will be expected to become a core faculty member of the LGBTQ Equity Haas Cluster and be actively involved in planning Cluster programming and research, as well as sharing responsibility for the administration of the Cluster. The Cluster is looking for a scholar who is both an outstanding researcher as well as has the capacity for distinguished teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Cluster is also interested in individuals who may have had non- traditional career paths or who may have taken time off for personal reasons (e.g., caretaking or disability), or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academe (e.g., in the arts, advocacy, or professional service).

Basic qualifications: The basic qualification required to be considered an applicant for this position is a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or the completion of all degree requirements (except the dissertation) at the time of application.

Additional qualifications: A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Gender Studies or any related field is required by the start date.
