"What's this world coming to?"
"Can you believe what's happening to our society?"
"When will we see leaders like we used to have 20 or 30 years ago?"

We hear these laments routinely now in headlines and soundbites that seem intent on destroying Christian values. But who's to blame? In Harry Kraemer's view, much of the blame falls on each of us when we call for value-based leaders in our society. His view is that looking for a new leader to correct our course is applying yesterday's thinking to a "today" problem; and he offers carefully thought-out solutions.

At the Catholics@Work Breakfast Series in March, Kraemer will focus on the importance of values-based Catholic leadership. He turns the concept of leadership upside-down, arguing that real change and real leadership start at the bottom, with each person, rather than at the top. He will share with us his perspective on a key principle to becoming a successful value-based leader-silence! While this may sound counter-intuitive he will explain the value of silence in honest self-reflection, which he sees as essential to successful leadership. His biography shows he has the experience to offer judgements that will change our thinking.

Kraemer was the CEO of Baxter International Inc., a $9-billion global healthcare company. Now he is Professor of Management and Strategy at Northwestern University, where he is one of its most popular lecturers, and a prominent practicing Catholic.

Kraemer wrote "From Values to Action: The Four Principles of Values-Based Leadership" and "Becoming the Best: Build a World-Class Organization Through Values-Based Leadership."
His impact is seen in many of his former students. One created an organization to help African subsistence farmers become successful. Today that One Acre Fund helps 600,000 African farmers make a decent living. In support, Kraemer subsequently dedicated all profits from his book "From Values to Action" to the fund.
