The Oshman Family JCC presents:

Liberalism vs. Conservatism: American/Israeli Connections

Tuesday, March 28, 7:30pm-9:30pm, Palo Alto

The Oshman Family JCC is honored to welcome Dr. Ruth Calderon, one of Israel's leading figures spearheading efforts to revive Hebrew culture and a pluralistic Israeli-Jewish identity.

Dr. Calderon will discuss the topic of "Liberalism vs. Conservatism: Opposing Trends Within Israeli and American Societies" from the vantage point of her experience as an academic, community leader and public servant and through studying the rich Jewish texts of our tradition in order to infuse contemporary discourse with the wisdom of the ages.

This discussion is part of a series of sessions led by Dr. Calderon on "Jewish Creativity: Innovation, Culture and Meaning." Over the course of five days, she will offer insight into how Jews can conceptualize and actualize the future of Jewish life and how Judaism can inspire public service. She will address questions like:

* What role should Judaism play in defining an ethical vision for the State of Israel?

* How can traditional Jewish text contribute to a rich Jewish identity alongside a commitment to modernity?

* How do we foster meaningful and substantive Jewish experiences for our children and our families?

* What do Israeli and American Jews have to learn from one another about Jewish identity today?

Dr. Calderon co-established ELUL, the first beit midrash (House of Learning) in which secular and religious women and men studied and taught together, in 1989 in Jerusalem. In 1996 in Tel Aviv, she founded ALMA, a Jewish liberal arts program for advanced learning.

Dr. Calderon is the author of "A Bride for One Night" and "Talmudic Alpha Beta" and was a member of the Knesset from 2013-2015. A scholar-in-residence with the Shalom Hartman Institute, faculty member Dr. Calderon holds a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Talmud from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
