Take a trip back with Humanities West to 1660s England, where the Restoration Era finds London throwing off the shackles of Puritanism and beginning to have a bit of cheeky fun, thanks to "the Merrie Monarch" Charles II. This two-day event boasts a bevy of the country's top academics, giving engaging presentations on this important period, when all kinds of liberating social and scientific advances were coming onto the scene -- including the rise of coffee houses and women appearing on stage at indoor theaters. On Friday, there's a talk on Power, Pomp and Pleasure in the Restoration Court, exploring Charles II's influence, followed by a performance of the music of 17th-century London with Gilbert Martinez on the harpsichord, Joshua Lee on the viola da gamba and soprano Rita Lily. Saturday features in-depth explorations of various topics with leading Restoration experts, wrapping up with an all-inclusive panel discussion.
