Left Coast Chamber Ensemble opens its 2013-2014 season with Point/Counterpoint with Christine Brandes, a concert exploring extremes of simplicity and complexity in music with compositions by J.S. Bach alongside the work of American composer Elliott Carter.

Noted for her radiant, crystalline voice and superb musicianship, guest soprano Christine Brandes will perform a selection of Bach arias in which a vocal melody is set against wind obbligato parts.

Carter's Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello and Harpsichord looks back to Bach's time, incorporating the sonority of the harpsichord and old dance forms into a modern idiom. Guest Katherine Heater joins Left Coast musicians on harpsichord.

Complementing the Bach and Carter is "this until", composed specifically for LCCE's flutist Stacey Pelinka by Erik Ulman, an emerging “New Complexity” composer who uses such intricate rhythms and melodies that his music sounds improvised. Works by Albert Roussel and John Dowland complete the program.
